Wine Estate Melsheimer, Mosel

Thorsten and Stefanie Melsheimer are operating the family –owned vineyard in its 5th generation. Approximately 50% of the estates vineyards are classified “very steep slopes”. Although the Mosel valley is known for its’ steep slopes vineyards overlooking the river, only 5% of them are classified “very steep slopes”.  Part of the regions cultural heritage they are for obvious reasons not easy to cultivate and therefore often abandoned. The “Melsheimers” are members of the “Klitzekleine Ring”, an association committed to preserve and restore these slopes.
On the family’s slopes with their slate soils the Riesling-grapes are mounted ecologically. Since 1997 the estate is a certified member of “Ecovin” (Federal Association of Ecological Vine-makers).
The soil, the reduction of the crop by diminishing the grapes and the diligent work on the foliage provide the basis for a well-structured, multilayered wine. The vintage is done by hand. Once in the cellar the must ferments with wild yeast in big oak barrels and develops the predisposition it got in the vineyard, to become an excellent, typical “Moselriesling”.
